Dowsing, 2020
This piece was written in 2020 as an experiment in aleatoric processes. The title reflects the action of searching or divining for something, like the practices of dowsing for water or supernatural activity. In this piece, the mallet becomes the divining rod; the tool for searching for a musical experience.
The poem (of the performer’s choice) floats on top of the constant chime. This process of searching allows the performer to explore the meaning and sounds of the poem in a quiet, contemplative environment. The piece ends when this act of “dowsing” is complete, and the performer and the audience will leave having searched for and found a meaningful sonic space.
